Comparing two Porsches 25 years apart
If you had top trumps as kid in the 90's you likely had the supercar set. There was always the pull of the Ferrari F40 or the McLaren F1 but somewhere in there was the Porsche 911 Turbo.
When I was choosing the specification for my 992 Carrera I took inspiration from Bad Boys Turbo. A movie car from my childhood which also stood out as a supercar I really wanted to own. As I was now ordering my own 911 with the option to choose from scratch I looked to replicate the car with my own twist. Looking on now at the specification on performance figures I decided to compare them and see if my car was a supercar by 90's standards and not just looks.
What makes something a supercar?
When looking over the fastest 90's supercars there is quite a long list that get's thrown up. But once the McLaren F1 comes onto the scene there is a big jump in time before something faster comes along.
When you think about production supercars you always look towards mid engine Italian head turners. That was always usually the case as those cars were built by manufacturers that went and regularly won races in many different types of competition. But Porsche has always produced small nimble sports cars, if you look back many of the rear engine 911 cars were up there in performance with other flashier marques.
Getting more specific to the point of this blog post, the Porsche 964 turbo was a marker for speed back in the year of it's production 1994. Although it's one turbo produced some noticeable lag (I have never driven one - but I have researched it), once it gets going it performs up there with the fastest cars of the early 90's.
The 911 has always been the everyday sports car and the 992 is still in that bracket. Although the car is wider and longer now it stands up against the performance of that 964 with it's twin turbos and PDK gearbox. It's one of those everyday cars that can perform on the button to give you all the thrills of supercar while also getting to work or the shops.
My conclusion
While the current 992 Turbo S would considered the supercar in the family by 2020's standards, I'm not sure I'd spend double the money. The 992 Carrera is a supercar by 90's standards. As a kid who had Porsche models in the 90's to own my dream car with this performance, I'm far from disappointed.
There is actually another YouTube channel who have the car from the film and have posted a short video.
