How much my Porsche 718 Cayman cost me to buy

Jumping in not quite at the deep end

Before owning a Porsche 911 992 Carrera I bought a 718 Cayman to see how I felt about owning a 2 seater Porsche sport car as a daily driver.

I bought the car from a Porsche dealer who were selling the car as an ex demonstrator. This meant that I was able to buy the car with some of the first year depreciation already lost but with the car nearly new. I paid £45,450 for the car with the car specification new being a little over £52,000 with 3000 miles already on the clock.

What had been added to push up the cost

The car had been built by the dealer but was in the Porsche GT Silver colour I wanted. It had some useful extras that need to be added as a cost addition and do not come as part of entry level model. It was a PDK car with full leather seats which are a cost upgrade over the standard split leather/material ones. It had also been specified with the 20 inch Carrera S wheels in black. As in the image at the top of the blog when painted in black they come with the full colour crest in the centres.

An addition of front and rear parking sensors had also been included. I would advise adding these when buying a Cayman as gauging the front and rear end points can be difficult. You can't visually see the end of the car either at the front or the back from the drivers seat. You can gauge it and get a feel but these sensors just remove that problem and with it being a Cayman price point they are an extra that have to be added.

How long did I keep the car and what did the car cost me?

I owned the car for about 11 months and only decided to part with it as I needed to clear the finance from my credit history to apply for a mortgage. As I purchased the car as an ex demonstration model I saved myself from some of the depreciation. I eventually traded the car back to the local Porsche dealer (they will often be interested in buying your car if it under 5 years old) for £38,750.

When factoring some interest and costs from the finance agreement in total the car cost me £8,423 in interest and depreciation for the 11 months.

Conclusion

Porsche cars are all built to order either by customers or dealers for centre demonstration models so their depreciate curve is shallower than that of mass production performance cars. So quite often you can find owning these types of products is less costly for periods than owning a new mass produced car which can loose half it's value in the first year! I have experience of that myself with BMW products.

If you are looking to try a new Porsche the 718 is a good entry point and will give you the brand experience before trying more expensive models.
