Creating my Porsche 991 992 Carrera on the web configurator V The real life car

Ordering a car from scratch has never been so realistic

If you have ever ordered a car brand new, with your own design choices, you will be familiar with using a car brochure and ticking boxes on an order form. These days ordering a car is nearly as realistic as building it in front of you with new manufacturer configurators.
There have been different versions of computerized configurators being used that I have seen over the years but none have been as close as I have seen now. Realistic 3D models which can replicate final colours and give you an idea of what you will eventually receive are now a reality.

Before ordering my entry level base Porsche 911 992 Carrera 2 I used the Porsche website configurator to spec the car.

When using the configurator you can set the background to either a scenic view or just plain white. This gives you either outside reflections or clean room white light on the paint so you can see how the car looks in real life. If you watch to the end of the video you will be able to see the difference.

You can then load any combination of free and cost extra items to build your car and get a final price. Once you have built the car you might find yourself going back and taking things off!

All options are visually replicated while totalling the price for you

While you can add nearly any option that creates a physical change to the car you also get a running total of the cost at the top. You get the running total including the extras while being shown an options total below. This allows you to see how much you car options are totalling up so you can decide if it is too much.. or not.

All angles are covered

The most useful and brilliant part of this system in my option is the ability to see all standard views of the car, inside and out, replicating you option choices every time. If you want to go even further, you can trigger the 360 degree view which will allow you to move around giving you different perspectives using the mouse. I used this extensively while choosing my car specification to try and decide if I had chosen exactly what I wanted.

Final report

Once you have finished your design you can create a summary pdf document showing you all the extras and costs for your finished vehicle. As part of this you can also take note of your design code which will allow you to go into the dealer and generate the car or allow you to go back in and modify the design without starting again.

I chose a simple Black paint with a split black/red bordeaux leather interior. When ordering the car I wasn't able to see another model at the dealer in a similar design but I did look at a lot of other cars online. I was very impressed with just how much the configurator previewed the eventual car when it arrived at the dealer.

If you are going to order a Porsche of any model type spending time checking out all the features and options through this configurator is a must. It will give you a life like idea of how any changes will effect the final car depending on what you choose to order.
