718 Cayman & 992 Carrera I've owned them BOTH

Porsche 718 compared to a Porsche 992 Carrera 2

Why I bought a 718 Cayman first

When I first decided to try out owning a Porsche I went straight to the newest models. I went completely entry level in an ex demo 718 Cayman and ran it for a year. You can view how much that cost me here https://youtu.be/yFlRon8DCnY

I traded that 718 Cayman in to remove it from my finance record so I could apply for a mortgage. In the end I didn't do that and bit the bullet to buy the Porsche I really wanted which was the new 992 Carrera. Again getting the car at the entry level model which was the Carrera 2.

How similar are the cars when performing the same task

With both cars I bought them to use as my only car and to perform as something to do the daily commute as well as to enjoy at the weekends. As you can imagine the performance of both cars becomes irrelevant when travelling at low commute speeds. You don't get there any faster in either car. So in this situation you look towards comfort of the car over performance and I would have to say I lean towards the 992 when looking at this. The car does feel more comfortable when it comes to the ride and also I just find it a nicer place to be. When saying that the 718 isn't a horrible car to be inside of but the step up to a newer interior design brings a more enjoyable experience.

When it comes to enjoying some of the performance on the open roads you can tell a difference between the 2 cars. However they both have their own personality and different layouts. When looking at this I really would recommend trying both cars over a range of driving if you are wanting to make a choice.

Is it fair to compare the cars back to back?

The answer to that question really at the moment is no. The 718 is half way through it's model life and overlaps with some exterior features to the 992 but carries on with the shared interior of the 991 model 911. A fairer comparison between the entry level Porsche and the flagship 911 is going to be better made when the 718 reaches a model change. Once that car receives the digital dash and PCM now featured in the 992 I may find it tougher to choose one over the other for daily commuting.

If you purely make your choice based on the visual design of the 2 cars then that makes it an easier choice either way. As long as you can afford to get to either price point choose the car you prefer if I was being honest. If you love the performance of the 992 but prefer the looks of the 718 then you may find the 718 GTS 4.0 more to your liking!
